What happens when AI stops playing games? [Paid Content for IBM]

The question, “can a machine be made to think like a person?” has always been tied to strategy games. Games, with their clear rules and obvious winners and losers, were perfect proving grounds for early computer scientists, who could break them down into clearly defined problem sets. Audiences could marvel at the progress of man vs machine face offs, even if they didn’t fully understand the underlying technology.
The earliest AI game systems relied on a brute force, top-down approach: programmers downloaded every possible outcome into their AI systems, which were built around narrowly defined, rule-based criteria. In the 1950s, the earliest versions of neural networks and machine learning arrived. This represented a shift towards bottom-up programming, systems designed to determine the probability of various outcomes based on training data. One early system, a virtual rat solving a maze, was made up of vacuum tubes, motors, and clutches. As the rat navigated, the machine learned and shifted probabilities.
IBM debuted their first AI Grand Challenge - a multi-year effort meant to push the limits of artificial intelligence - in 1997. Deep Blue beat reigning chess world champion Gary Kasparov, and was seen as the final triumph for the top-down approach. In the last decade, advances in machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing paved the way for AIs like Watson on Jeopardy!, AlphaGo, and Dota 2-increasingly complex systems that still existed within the framework of games.

Debating is stupid. There's always a right answer and debating is just one side denying that right answer while the other is trying to make them understand. In situations where you're given a stance if that stance isn't right then there's nothing you can do to win the debate.

As cool as this was, this doesnt really show anything. I think we needed at least 2 debates with topics on very different ends of a spectrum. Otherwise, there is no proof that Project Debater is truly flexible like a person can be.

I think the artificial intelligence actually did a better job. There are a few tweaks here and there to make it a little more refined. That being said, I conjecture that it only lost due to the majority of the audience simply showing more empathy toward the human.

I really don't know bout this one after watching it. It feels like that being a good debater is like making a good movie, is to touch the emotions of the audience. Statements won't make an impact if the audience can't relate with it. Project Debate could be better at reviewing policies than debates.

• 3:48 - Cherry-picked example. What about when Watson answered Toronto for the final-Jeopardy! question in the category of "US Cities" or when it answered chemise for a keyboard key. ¬_¬ • 11:40 - Hmm, I can't tell if it's smart or dangerous. 🤔 • 12:25 - Resorting to ad hominem attacks in a debate? 🤨 It must be losing. • 13:08 - Trying to psyche out the opponent? 🤨 I guess the A.I. really is human. • 13:25 - Is she worried about the audience or can the computer just not keep up? •13:32 - Present your arguments. Yes, I'll gift them alright. The A.I. can't even distinguish homonyms. • 14:03 - Perfect use for A.I.: let the machines debate the conspiracy-theorists instead of wasting humans' time with them. 👍 • 17:50 - People think that debate is beyond an A.I.'s capabilities, but this example shows why it's not; debate essentially just boils down to little more than stating a bunch of facts. It may not be compelling debate, but it's basically what the bones of a debate are. Of course, the _winner_ of a debate is usually the one that makes an emotional argument, not a factual one. • 21:13 - Of course, this isn't a good experiment since the humanness and AIness were known and definitely influenced them.

They made a big hype around it, but the AI was not that good. I mean it was able to create good sentences and points in the debate, but it was too big hype around it. And because IBM paid for the whole thing, I am very skeptical. I would have been absolutely impressed, if I am able to test this thing myself, like download an app, and talk and debate with it myself. Now it’s just a cool video, that might be usable in ten years.

I hope you understand what iam trying to say. But that machine making jokes, thats great

The test in the video should not lead people to believe that computers are better at debating than humans or that the guy lost. To truly test the machine, a debate would have to take place where both parties (human & computer) would have to argue both sides to different audiences, and then the data analyzed. Some arguments are going to have bias to them, therefore a debate must be handled by providing equality - allowing both sides to argue each other's side. Most people would probably choose to subsidize preschool before dabating the topic, therefore the uphill battle is debating against subsidizing preschool. Let's make these debates more rigorous to truly test the ability of this IBM project.

I don't like the "sport" of debating. I don't think that being able to defend every side of an argument is something we should want. It's only going to lead us to accepting morally unacceptable opinions, because technically each side of an argument has something to it. Debating should come out of ones experiences and life, to defend the view they truly believe in.

@naramoro I think it's just that teaching the AI to write them wasn't the task here. I have no doubt that building an AI that could a slam poetry, for instance, is possible, and even simpler that creating the debator. The real challenge is not the writing, but the decision making progress. Once they'll nail it (and it's getting closer, but not quite there yet), teaching it how to write it's own phrases won't be that complicated task.

I mean, the second phase to that is that they also pull out their app and have two people listening to robots fight on their behalf... Making both of them look stupid since neither could hold their own against an AI designed to point out fallacies in arguments and statistics. While I see this as being fun in the short term, the scarier part comes down to when you have AI lawyers and prosecutors and judges. Imagine being accused of a murder you did not commit, but circumstantial evidence puts you in a not great position. You get a public attorney, while the state has a prosecutor AI to assist with court processing. In what instance do you see yourself going free against an AI that is literally designed to convince people of a ruling, that can compete with the top humans in the world?

@LAN Fan are you an AI master debator?
LAN Fan 8 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
This may be true, but they are simple from a mental processing standpoint. Take chess for example. There is a finite limit on the number of moves that either you or your opponent can make, and your brain is constantly assessing the risk vs reward outcome of any possible move. These are the types of things that computers are very good at, as it essentially comes down to a very complex math equation. Debate requires language processing, knowledge of the topic, circumstantial knowledge of society's relation to the topic, and a knowledge of your audience. It also requires real time responses based on natural language processing, a process that requires an insane amount of mental connections. Yes, games are an art form, but debate and conversation are significantly more complex from a processing standpoint than most games.
