The future of foldable PCs at CES 2020

CES 2020 has demonstrated the state of foldable screen technology. We look at Intel's Horseshoe Bend prototype, Dell's Concept Ori and Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Fold. On one hand, the showings have convinced me that these products will be a big deal at some point. On the other, they’ve convinced me that that point is some way off.

I was actually hoping some company would make an expensive gag, and among those book like folding screens there would be a brochure like folding screen, with two folds. Just for shits and giggles. Who knows, maybe it would click? As thinking of it now, it would actually make sense for a phone. You have a front, regular screen size, with "active" edge display on the right hand side. When you infold it you get a 3x times bigger tablet. It would be thick as hell, but at the same time, 3 screen spaces on one screen maybe would be just right for productivity (two horizontal apps, and one screen a keyboard).

Why don't these idiots understand, foldable should only be for tablets.. The point of foldable is to make something big portable, that's it. It isn't meant to take away functionality. You fold a laptop and you'll end up with areas where you can't see etc.. It's just like the smart watch.. It ain't meant to replace a laptop or phone. It is best as a notification and fitness device that also tells time. That's it. Am I the only one who finds these things common sense?

For me, one of the greatest disadvantage of using laptop was its relatively smaller screen size. But in case of the foldable tablet this problem can be resolved, because it can be folded in to the size of the usual laptop when carrying and when using it could be fully unfolded into a tablet that has a much larger screen. Of course in this case you would need a separate keyboard cover or keyboard of slim form factor that's easy to carry with.

It's pretty ridiculous how fast this tech has advanced in just 1 year.. Last year there was what, maybe 2 foldable devices out on the market? Less than a year later everyone has at least a concept device. Just imagine what will happen in the next 3-4 years when the prices come all the way down and the tech gets even more durable, thinner and better.

ElldarR_ 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
What I’d really want from one of these is a more gaming-esque (higher power one) which is foldable, so you can have it as a book, a laptop, or you could unfold it fully and have some stand that hopefully won’t cost $1000, that allows it to stand up like a desktop monitor, so I can have a wireless keyboard and mouse. It’d be the ultimate computer! I could use it for literally everything!!! Especially if it’s touch and I get a pen aswell!
Farsight 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
how is that good for everything, you took the laptop which is a convenient portable package that still has lots of usability and productivity, and replaced it with 3 separate items to carry and keep track up, 2 additional batteries to keep charged and what do you gain out of it?
Gentleman Gamer

I don't understand all the hype about foldable screen. The tech is mediocre and there's absolutely nothing super special about it! Why would anyone create such a device in the first place?! And who would potentially use it?! No pro uses touch-screen keyboard. All manufacturers even specifically create physical keyboards for their tablets because it's way more comfortable for extended typing experience. I'm kinda getting rollable tv, because this way it (sort of) takes less space. But the rest? Can someone please give a valid reason where and why those laptops/devices would be useful?
Adam Smith
Adam Smith 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
Good question not only that but they come with the huge downside of having to use a crappy plastic screen instead of a glass screen. Plastic scratches extremely easily so you will see these laptops and phones with thousands of scratches on them after the first year... 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ

A 17" tablet that folds which makes it take up roughly the footprint of an 8.5" tablet when folded that you can fit into a typical bag. A 12.9-inch iPad Pro is pretty large for plenty of people. Not necessarily heavy but it's large. Imagine if that iPad Pro could fold in half to become more portable aka to fit into a handbag or something. THAT'S the use-case.

IanTH 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
And not only will they be that way for a long time to come (price & reliability), but these will just be *options*. I feel like people see other potential configurations and think that means all current devices will disappear. Most people will not need a device like this, but there will be some instances where the foldable will make sense and so we'll just see them live beside conventional design for years to come.
