The novel coronavirus outbreak has put the world’s biggest cities into lockdown -- and thrown tech manufacturing into chaos. And because of the high-speed, low-inventory theory of lean manufacturing, it could take a long time for the industry to bounce back.

"Skilled labour?" No, large corporations mean CHEAP LABOUR. If not China then many might move their assembly line to India. Let's see what happens. I hope to see jobs move back to home continent, at least. And, done in an environmentally friendly way... because look at the pollution being produced by China.

Apple needs to take its hundreds of billions of dollars of cash and invest in the USA and secure it's manufacturing in a country that shares it's company's values. China doesn't want to be a market for Apple products, they want to BE the next Apple. We're learning what appears "cheap" becomes very expensive. Do the right thing Apple, here is your chance.

Drop in laptop shipment mentioned: "5.7 Million laptops shipped in 2028, 48% drop from last year" As a technology enthusiast, my need of laptop dropped even more. I believe that laptop's loss in shipment is gained mainly by smartphones. Pandemic affected just about everyone and everything anyway. Most of what people are doing with their laptops can be done with smartphones, even more, right? And my guess is, that's how laptop goes the way of the typewriter. Seen people with heads "buried" in their smartphones, even while walking across dangerous street :( That's just how smartphones technology have boldly gone where none had before :) Recommend just like me, keep your smartphone in your pocket. Pretty sure whatever it is you need to do with your smartphone, it can wait until you're in a safe place. Keep safe, stay home, let's survive this pandemic. So help us God!

@Anirudh I agree that business looks for profit. And that's what China pounced upon. Cheaper stuff adds to profit margins. Unfortunately that's what creates dependency too and now, world is looking at China for getting the supplies which they need. But if you look at exceptions, South Korea didn't follow this suit. They made their own testing kits. Currently there are 650+ testing labs in South Korea and they have made n94 masks available for the entire nation made by them. My point was and is just this, nations, businesses can do a lot by themselves, including taking measures to bring the costs down too. I know most don't and won't. But as we can see, we need just one wake up call to realise how big and costly price we may need to pay for choosing to do so. Sadly, things won't change much, even when the cost is lives which we are losing right at the moment we are writing these messages.
Anirudh 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
@Aman Sharma I see your point. But if the same kits are manufactured in China, it would cost much lesser that it would in India. Which is the main point for a business. India has a lot of resources but it's too far from rivaling China in it's production might. All manufactures are close by so costs go down. There are very few customers who are willing to (and actually afford to!) To pay more for something which is made indigenously. That's the reality of capitalism.
Aman Sharma
Aman Sharma 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
@Anirudh well, it may be but then again, world is not about iPhone only isn't it? Why can't we, India make ppe in India or our clothing or raw materials. There is a lot that can be done at least within India. The only reason most jump to China is to have the less cost. Cheaper isn't always mean better and we are seeing it right now even for covid kits in Spain, Italy etc where these kits are not working. In India, our own MyLabs kit is ready in record time and in 1200rs as compared to 4500rs foreign kit and all 10 tests required to confirm it's authenticity have come right. So my point is that we can and we should. An iPhone is a luxury which most of the world can live without upgrading.
Anirudh 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
According to an analyst, an iPhone made entirely in Germany would cost €4000. So....

Brian Green
Brian Green 9 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
bhargav atluri maybe so, just remember that when a company sells an item at a lower volume, that tends to mean the cost to make each device goes up. That cost could be passed on to consumers making tech even more expensive as to not effect their earnings call. In economics nothing is ever as simple as it seems and a multitude of factors go into the price of each item. We might see tech like web cameras and laptops and monitors go up in price as people prepare for the possibility of working at home in the future.
