Cruise, the self-driving subsidiary of General Motors, revealed its first vehicle to operate without a human driver, the Cruise Origin. The vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel and pedals, is designed to be more spacious and passenger-friendly than typical self-driving cars. Cruise says the electric vehicle will be deployed as part of a ride-hailing service, but declined to say when that might be.

going to work and back..shopping for groceries.. "sure." but still want the ability to drive in case of system failure, and just because driving in certain circumstances can relieve stress and be freeing. long trips between points of interest or cities is where I'd turn on the auto pilot.. perhaps backing up a large trailer into a stall like them long haul truckers with cargo.. amazing as the tech is, not so sure removing the driver entirely is a wise idea.. but would give it a try if it were an affordable option.. why I'm not overly concerned at the moment.. don't see them giving the tech out to those in need for free either.

I wouldn't be the first, but I'd keep a close eye on the development and popular adoption of this tech and when both reach a certain level I'd start using it. Maybe if I had much better health insurance I'd be willing to ride it while it's still relatively unsafe.

There is nothing cool about this, I know that employers REALLY want to get rid of human drivers so that cars can work 24/7 without a break but still... this is weird and nonsensical. Not everything in this world HAS to be fully automatic.

Commenting 3 months in the future when the Covid 19 pandemic is still going. We have started to reopen. Anywho I would not want to be facing other people. There should be a swivel option so I can face away from people. Also there needs to be dedicated cars for people going to hospitals etc. Even if someone only has a broken leg this pandemic has me looking at the world differently. Like for instance in an unrelated technology, I love the idea of finger print scanners. But gloves and a global pandemic really has me thinking we should use other things than fingerprint scanners.

Not going to happen anytime soon autonomous driving in big cities because 99.9% of all rideshare pickups and drop-off’s are made illegally and in milliseconds. Uber and Lyft do not pull over in legal parking curbs in San Francisco because there are none rather instead they randomly pull over and customers jump in jump out . Autonomous vehicles are required to abide by the law that means pulling over legally everytime to pickup customers or drop them off . There is no infrastructure for thousands of autonomous vehicles in big cities to accommodate pickup dropoff zones legally . An entire new infrastructure throughout the big cities needs to be built just like BUS STOPS and thats a long way out . Until then happy Ubering and Lyfting 😁

It's a little bit strange that the reporter visited Cruise and he just sat in the vehicle with the founder. They didn't actually go anywhere. If the technology was so advanced, you'd think the founder would try to show it off and demonstrate how awesome it was. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of Tesla owners are using Tesla self-driving features to navigate through stop and go traffic on a daily basis.

Thinking to the future and innovation will probably require a new term for people going from one place to another. That being "a conveyance." How many people wish they could've gotten on the ground floor investment in Microsoft or other like company that took off? What is the next big thing, who is willing to take a risk and invest in this kind of innovation?

They certainly have the right to ask. And under our unbounded-government model, they may well succeed (if they grease the right politician palms). However, it's probably just a matter of time before insurance companies refuse to cover human-driven vehicles because of their higher danger. And it seems we've already allowed insurance companies to lobby their services into government mandates. Either human-driving has to go, or maybe we'll get enlightened and scrap the pay-for-law unbounded-government model. ;)

I thought about this vehicle like 5 years ago, but this carriage style version would be the private one. The ride sharing version would have 3 rows, with 2 seats each, and they would be all pointed to the same direction. It would have one door for each seat, and perhaps some separation between seats to give people more privacy.
